an ivory netsuke figure of hotei

edo, 18th century

Represented seated on his bag of treasures holding a chaplet in his left hand, with a blissful expression, his loose robe revealing a rounded stomach, the face smiling, the fleshy-lobed ears falling on his shoulders. The ivory richly patinated is incised and stained with foliated arabesques, and the use of time bears the sweetness of the character. Very large “himotoshi”. The netsuke of “tobori” type.
A hole made later suggests that the netsuke was fixed on a stand, as shows the patina slightly different on the base. A dragon carved in ”kebori”on reverse.
“Hotei”, one of the seven happiness gods, or “kami”, symbolise the prosperity and the abundance.
